Whānau mai – Antenatal education

Whānau mai – is a journey through pregnancy, childbirth and the early weeks of parenting that incorporates a Maori world view and traditional Maori birthing practices.

This is a 12 hour programme run either at the weekend or evenings in various locations across the city.

Included in the programme are:

  • Health and wellbeing in pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Labour and birth
  • After baby is born
  • Weaving ipu whenua and using rongoa

Wahakura Wānanga

For those who would like to learn how to make wahakura, please call the office for the date of the next two day wānanga. You do not need to have weaving experience, just a desire to learn. This is open to all who would enjoy this mahi.

Early Start Programme

Early Start is an early intervention programme providing intensive long term support to achieve tamariki and whānau wellbeing goals.

Referrals can be made during pregnancy or up until pēpē is 9 months old.

Support to access Early Childhood Education and/or School

We are able to support you to access the right Early Childhood Education and/or school for you and your tamariki.

We can tautoko you if your child/tamaiti is aged 3 – 5 1/2 years

We can ……

  • Work with you to understand early childhood education choices
  • Plan with you how to support your tamaiti and their learning
  • Visit early childhood services with you to help choose the best one for you and your tamaiti
  • Support you and your child to become involved in the early childhood centre
  • Provide support to you and your child to maintain regular attendance at the early childhood centre
  • We can also work with you to choose the best school for you

Benefits of Early Childhood Education:

  • Builds on the interests and abilities of your tamaiti
  • Provides a chance for you and your tamaiti to meet new people, make friends, get along with others and be involved in the community
  • Helps your child to gain the skills to be ready for school and to do better at school

Triple P Programme – Healthy Lifestyle Group

This group programme is for whānau who want to have healthier lifestyles.

The programme teaches strategies to promote healthier family eating and encourage kids to be more active, without the arguments and stress!

Triple P stands for Positive Parenting Programme. The programme includes 10 x 1.5 hour group sessions and 4 support phone calls over 17 weeks.

The sessions include information, group discussion and practicing how to handle tricky situations with children.

The programme is targeted for whānau with tamariki aged 4 or 5 years old.

Please discuss the programme when your tamariki has their B4 School check; with your Tamariki Ora/Well Child Nurse; or with your doctor.

Incredible Years Parenting Programme

 

The Incredible Years parenting programme acknowledges that parenting is one of the most important jobs adults can do. The programme aims to encourage positive family relationships.

This programme is provided by the Ministry of Education and Te Puawaitanga at no cost to participants and is facilitated by trained group leaders.

We provide:

  • Practical step-by-step suggestions for parents of 3 to 8 year olds, to help handle everyday family situations.
  • An encouraging and supportive learning environment.
  • Strategies to help parents manage challenging behaviours.

What is covered in the programme?

  • Connecting with your child through play
  • Using praise to build your child’s self-esteem.
  • How to use praise and small rewards to motivate your child
  • Setting limits
  • Helping your child to develop life-long skills through positive discipline

Involvement in an Incredible Years Group means you will …

  • Develop strategies to build positive relationships with your children
  • Learn strategies to manage challenging behaviours
  • Participate in group discussions
  • Attend 14 sessions
  • Meet once a week for 2.5 hours
